Things For Tourists To Do In Ireland

In Dublin you can sample some of the finest cuisine in Britain. Often your holiday accommodation, a hotel, will have some kind of restaurant, but it's most certainly the family owned pubs etc that serve up the finest meal.

Residents of Dublin are some what confused as to why people would want to trek round the typical tourist attractions in other Capital cities when you could spend a long leisurely afternoon sampling the world famous Irish bitter in a city pub.

Quite a lot of people say that they go on holiday to the city not to take in all of its sights, but to experience the unique atmosphere of the city, whether it's the rustic holiday accommodation you stay in or just to soak up some of the cities events. There is no better way to sample this unique atmosphere than by visiting one of Dublin's pubs or bars.

Nearly every bar that you go into in the city is guaranteed to give you a warm welcome and a lot of tourists join in with the locals in a boisterous round of singing and dancing. The city has a phenomenal number of bars and pubs tightly clustered together.

The city has managed to catch on with the times and there are now also a new generation of coffee houses for those people either not wanting to drink alcohol or those wanting to sober up from having one drink too many.

Dublin is most certainly a dynamic city, with a mix of cultures incorporating its rich heritage of Celtic myths and legends. Also it's Georgian past mixed with the new trends and traditions appeal to its vibrant youth.

The city is blessed by being in the path of the Gulf Stream and there are many a magnificent garden full of exotic plants. The best months are June to August when the average temperature is 19 -20 degrees. On the down side however is the amount of rain that Dublin receives and tourists should be prepared for sudden downpours, so make sure you pack coats.

It has seen a massive growth in the number of holiday homes and cottages that are now available to rent direct from their owners, in Dublin itself. Many American tourists come over to Dublin to trace the routes of their ancestors, they like to stay in the more traditional holiday accommodation. A large percentage of Americans now stay in holiday cottages which they find more comfortable and relaxing than staying in an impersonal hotel.

A lot of Americans go back home and enthuse about a traditional full Irish breakfast. They marvel at the thick tasty bacon, free range eggs and home made sausages. They may also try the wonderful black pudding, Irish potato cakes, tomato and toast. To help it go down they will drink black Irish coffee laced with a liberal helping of rum. No tourist ever forgets the mouth watering experience of their first full Irish breakfast.

At lunch time they may sample a traditional Irish stew washed down by generous helpings of Irish stout. For Fish lovers Dublin Bay is world renowned for its magnificent prawns. For lovers of salmon, the fast flowing clean fresh water provides some of the finest salmon found any where in the world.

At night many tourists manage to find space to try a succulent Irish steak and then take a small drop of the local Irish whisky. The Irish say that theirs is better than the Scotch whisky because it is distilled three times resulting in a smoother drink. I certainly agree with them

I don't find it difficult to see why the city, Dublin, is so popular amongst tourists for its food and drink. The two things that visitors complain of when getting home from Dublin is that they miss the food and also that they have put on weight!

I would recommend the city to all. There's something for everyone, whether you have kids or are retired the great mix of activities will please all. Just remember that not all holiday accommodation may be suitable for all, and some larger families will probably prefer to rent a holiday cottage of their own.

Beer Trivia-Homebrewing Guide

Everyone loves trivia. Whether watching Jeopardy, reading a homebrewing guide, or playing Trivial Pursuit, we all love answering those little-known questions and impressing those around us.

To begin with, have you ever had the unfortunate luck of being served a watered-down beer? Didn't that just burn you up? Well, back in ancient Babylonia around 1750 B.C., a law was passed that if a barkeep gave a watered down beer to a patron, the owner would be drowned in his own offending brew. Now I call that justice!

Also, most of us know the story of the pilgrims landing at Plymouth Rock. But here's something to impress your history-loving friends with next time you're out: The big reason the pilgrims stopped there and did not travel south to warmer climates is simply because they ran out of beer! Just think: If they had brought more homebrew with a homebrewing guide, we may never have had a Thanksgiving!

On the other hand, Americans would not celebrate our independence during July 4th - and this would also mean that July would not be known as "American Beer Month" - I mean, what's more American than drinking homebrew with our best buds?

If you didn't know about that, though, then you probably didn't know that later on in the fall, down in Denver, Colorado, there is a huge celebration called "The Great American Beer Festival." Museums And Galleries In Amsterdam

Amsterdam is the nominal capital of the Netherlands, as well as its largest city. It sees approximately 3.5 million visitors per year and the number of attractions in the city explains why. Amsterdam is famous for its museums. Some of these are very well known, while others are not so well known, but also worth visiting.

Make sure that you visit Rijksmuseum that contains many artifacts, as well as paintings by artists such as Rembrandt. Stedelijk contains major collections of modern art dating from about 1880. The Van Gogh Museum is another well known museum that should be high on your list of places to see. Following these famous museums, you can also visit Rembrandt's House, the Amsterdam Historical Museum, the Maritime Museum and the Amstelkring Our Lord in the Attic which is a little church in the attic of a canal house in the heart of the red light district.

Other fascinating attractions include Anne Frank's House, the Heineken Brewery or the Artis Zoo. Dam Square is a must-see. It is not beautiful by any means, but is has a fascinating history. Part of Dam Square is the Royal Palace which is a striking piece of architecture.

If you are looking for a relaxing break from the bustle of the city, Begijnhof is the place to go. It is a large peaceful hidden courtyard with an old English church (the Oude Kerk), as well as the oldest house in Amsterdam, dating back to 1475. There are many other hidden courtyards around the city. The Hortus Horticultural Gardens are a small, but pleasant oasis in the city.

Amsterdam has become known as the Venice of the North for all of its canals. You cannot visit Amsterdam without taking a boat cruise or a canal tour. This can take you along any of the main city center canals or some of the smaller ones. While on the canals, make sure to appreciate some of Amsterdam's 1280 bridges. The most famous of these is the Magere Brug which is a traditional double-leaf Dutch draw-bridge. Also an intrinsic part of Amsterdam is its windmills. You can view eight windmills right in the heart of city and trip to Holland would not be complete without visiting at least one of them.

There are a variety of accommodation options in Amsterdam. It contains five star luxury landmark hotels, such as the old historic Hotel Krasnapolsky and Amstel Hotel or the modern Amsterdam Hilton. Otherwise you can choose a cozy little hotel on the banks of one of the canals. As hotels are becoming more difficult to find, bed and breakfasts are becoming more popular. Holiday rental apartments are available throughout the city and these are an appropriate choice for those who are looking for more space and privacy or who enjoy self-catering. Youth hostels are a good option for those on a budget, especially students and backpackers. If you are visiting during the summer months, you may decide to stay at a camping ground. If you are worried about the weather, make sure to choose grounds that offer bungalows as well.

Travel the Heavenly Mother Road, Route 66, Just for Kicks

Pop bottle enthusiasts, like the object of their affection, are composed of some volatile ingredients. The main element is nostalgia with a passionate effervescence as the driving force. Add some dynamic intensity as a stimulant and a pinch of fanaticism to give it some fizz and you've got yourself a true soda pop bedlamite.

Besides the occasional convention and the next big bottle show, there were few places to exhilerate and excite such a person. There is now a new third choice. A place appropriately called "Pops".

I first discovered Pops by accident while acting upon a lifelong desire to drive the infamous Route 66. It was the early evening of day three of my journey when I entered the unruffled Deep Fork River valley in Arcadia, Oklahoma. The glorious sunset had already finished as I drove westward on the Mother Road. The horizon now hid the sun which left the sky stained a beautiful crimson as dusk began to fall. My rented Audi hummed through the peaceful farmland that seemed to be endless. Words cannot begin to describe the freedom one feels while driving this iconic roadway. Thanks to cruise control and the virtually empty road, my eyes were free to wander and take in all the serenity that this stretch has to offer.

Then, suddenly something happened. The far reaches of the landscape were interrupted by something completely foreign to anything I'd expected to see in the flat outlands of Arcadia. "Is that a pop bottle?" I wondered out loud. It was and no, it wasn't lying in the road. It was off in the distance glowing with lights and over sixty feet tall. Many times on my trip I felt as if I were dreaming but this time I pinched myself. I couldn't be sure if this was real or not. For lack of a better description, it was out of this world.

As I drew closer another object began to come into view. Next to the towering bottle was another object. I rubbed my eyes and tried to refocus. It appeared to be something from outer space. Some sort of craft was just hovering there. At first, I thought maybe space aliens have as much interest in this giant bottle as I do. Then I noticed there are cars parked beneath this thing. People were pumping gas. This was a gas station. I looked at my fuel gauge. My tank was three-quarters full. I didn't need gasoline but I definately needed to stop and check this out.

I parked the Audi and stepped out of the car. I was in awe and staring with my mouth gaping open. The strange "spaceship" turned out to actually be a cantilever looming out from a comparatively tiny building. Criss-crossed steel beams seemed to levitate over the futuristic gas pumps. Looking at it, you would think the giant hundred foot awning would topple under its own weight and uproot the smaller building that anchored it. This is an architectural miracle, truly divine.

I closed my mouth and headed toward Pops. The front of the building is primarily made of glass, like one huge window. It was an enormous showcase displaying a gigantic colorful palette of soda pops, more than 7,500 of them. I could hear angels singing as I entered through the gates of soda pop heaven.

Once inside, I met numerous others that had apparently died and came to this place just like me. Some were sitting at the counter of a 50's-style soda fountain sipping their malts, floats and surreal-colored sodas through crooked straws. Others were consuming a variety of savory burgers, obviously the preferred cuisine in pop paradise. I quickly found an open seat at the counter and asked the angel working behind it for a soda. She informed me that the menu consisted of over four- hundred choices; everything from Austrian Cola to Hawaii's Waialuan Pineapple. I figured since this was heaven I should order appropriately, so I ordered "Amazing Grapes" (with a crooked straw, of course).

During my visit I was able to gather some interesting facts about Pops. That giant bottle out front is exactly sixty-six feet tall to commemorate the historic route. Named Bubbles, it is twenty feet in diameter, covered top to bottom with LED lights able to offer a dazzling light show and, of course, the tallest pop bottle in the world.

Pops opened its doors in July 2007, about one year after groundbreaking and offers a full menu that includes breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as homestyle and gourmet catering for reunions, picnics and other events. Weather permitting, you may choose to dine outdoors in the Deep Fork Tree Farm courtyard adjacent to the well manicured orchard of 66 Red Bud trees. Don't forget to visit the gift shop where you can purchase souvenirs or pick up a little something for your own special soda freak.

The visionary responsible for the creation of this bubbling nirvana is not a diety but Aubrey McClendon, CEO of Chesapeake Energy. It all started with a need for another gas station, but just another gas station seemed dull. McClendon realized it should be something splendid so he brought Rand Elliott, Oklahoma's favorite architect aboard. Together, they have managed to build a true attraction with a very unique blend of the past and the future, which will certainly prove to be draw whether you're a pop nut or not.  Marilyn Murril, mayor of Arcadia said this about Pops; "This is such a magnificent attraction, a destination for tourism [that] will bring more people to Arcadia."

For those still doubtful about whether I was truly in heaven or not, recently the cast and crew of one of TNT's hit TV shows dropped in for a brunch buffet and to sample some fizz. Which show? Saving Grace.
